Cork External Wall Coating

What is Cork External Wall Coating?

At Home Energy Save GB, we have developed a unique system to enable cork external wall coating to be used in the UK.

While cork is commonly used in Iberia to keep homes cool, it couldn’t be used in the UK because cork encourages mould growth in cold, wet weather.

We have patented a system to eliminate mould during and after installation. When colour is added to the cork, we use our unique pearl colouring system, as opposed to a water-based colour, which can encourage mould growth.

In addition, a proprietary additive developed and patented by us and verified by CSIS Research Institute is added to totally eliminate the risk of mould within the coating.

How Does Cork External Wall Coating Work?

Our Cork External Wall Coating is a high-performance, natural wall protection solution made from real cork and applied by spray.

Once applied to your property’s external walls, it forms a breathable, flexible membrane that not only shields your home from the elements but also provides excellent insulation. This natural insulation helps keep your home cooler in the summer by reducing heat penetration and warmer in the winter by retaining internal heat, improving energy efficiency year-round.

The coating is coloured to your chosen tone using our pearl colouring system, offering a natural textured finish that enhances your home’s appearance while delivering practical, long-term protection and comfort.

Benefits of Choosing Cork External Wall Coating

Cooler in Summer

Not only is cork a natural insulator, so it will keep summer heat out, we also apply a thermal reflective coating over the top as standard.

Warmer in Winter

The natural cork coating will also keep heat inside your home. Along with this, it's waterproofing qualities will eliminate thermal bridging.

Weatherproof and Durable

Cork is flexible, breathable and waterproof, protecting your walls from cracks and harsh weather.

Fire Resistant

Naturally fire-resistant, cork helps slow flame spread and won’t release harmful fumes when heated.

Eco-Friendly

Sustainably harvested, cork lowers your home’s carbon footprint and improves overall energy efficiency.

Reduces External Noise

Cork’s natural acoustic properties reduce outside noise, creating a quieter, more peaceful indoor environment.

Elasticity and Cork External Wall Coatings

At Home Energy Save GB, our cork external wall coatings have an impressive 380 per cent elasticity, allowing them to flex and move as buildings expand and contract with temperature changes.

Unlike traditional renders and coatings, which often crack or split under this pressure, cork stays intact. This flexibility makes it ideal for the UK’s unpredictable climate, where constant shifts in temperature can cause damage over time. With cork, you get a durable, long-lasting finish that maintains its appearance and performance, without the need for frequent repairs. It’s a smart way to protect your home’s exterior from the elements.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does cork coating last on walls?

With proper application and maintenance, cork external wall coatings can last 20 years or more. The natural properties of cork make it highly durable and resistant to cracking, peeling, and fading. It also provides excellent weather resistance against rain, wind, and UV exposure. However, regular inspections and occasional cleaning will help maintain its appearance and effectiveness. Choosing a professional installer and quality products further ensures the coating’s longevity, making it a great long-term investment for your home’s exterior.

Cork coatings are very versatile and can be applied to a wide range of surfaces. Common suitable surfaces include brick, concrete, cement render, pebbledash, painted walls, natural stone, and even glass and polycarbonate panels.

Before application, the surface must be properly cleaned and prepared, which may involve repairing cracks or removing loose paint. This ensures the cork adheres well and performs effectively. Whether you have a new build or an older property, cork coating can be adapted to suit your home’s needs.

Yes, cork coatings add an extra layer of thermal insulation to your home’s exterior walls. Cork is a natural insulator, helping reduce heat loss during colder months and keeping interiors cooler in summer. This can improve your home’s energy efficiency, potentially lowering heating and cooling costs.

While cork coating won’t replace full wall insulation, it acts as a complementary barrier that enhances overall thermal performance. It also helps reduce condensation and damp issues by allowing walls to breathe naturally.

The application process typically takes between two and four days, depending on the size and condition of your property. It starts with a thorough assessment and preparation of the walls, including any necessary repairs or cleaning. The cork coating is then applied using specialist spray equipment, which usually requires two coats for an even, durable finish. After application, the coating needs time to dry and cure.

Absolutely. Cork coatings are designed to withstand the UK’s often harsh weather conditions. They offer excellent resistance to rain, wind, frost, and UV rays. The natural flexibility of cork prevents cracking or peeling even with temperature fluctuations. Its breathable nature also helps prevent moisture build-up, reducing the risk of damp and mould. This makes cork coating a practical and protective choice for long-term external wall coverage.

Yes, one of the great benefits of cork external wall coatings is the wide range of colour options available. Using advanced colouring systems, coatings can be customised to suit your home’s style and surroundings. Whether you prefer neutral, earthy tones or something more bold and modern, there’s a colour to match your taste. Your installer will usually provide colour samples or charts during the consultation to help you make the best choice.

Cork coatings require minimal maintenance. Regularly cleaning the surface with a soft brush or low-pressure wash will keep it looking fresh and remove dirt or algae. Avoid using harsh chemicals or high-pressure jets as these can damage the coating. It’s also important to inspect the walls annually for any signs of damage or wear and arrange touch-ups if needed.

Definitely. Cork coating is an excellent choice for older homes as it can revitalise tired or damaged façades while offering added protection. Because it is breathable, cork allows moisture to escape, reducing damp and mould risks often found in older properties. Before application, the surface will be carefully prepared and repaired to ensure a strong bond.
