Causes of Damp in Chimneys
Metal or lead around the chimney roof junction can crack or lift, letting rainwater penetrate the chimney structure.
Weathered or missing mortar between bricks allows water to seep into the chimney, causing damp and potential structural damage.
Warm air from the fireplace meets cold flue walls, causing moisture to form and create internal dampness.
Moisture from surrounding walls travels upward into the chimney, particularly where walls or roof leaks exist, causing damp patches.
Limited airflow inside the flue traps moisture, preventing drying and promoting damp, mould, or masonry damage.
Cracked, missing, or obstructed rain caps let water enter the chimney, causing damp and potential interior damage.
Is Damp In Chimneys a Big Problem?
Damp in chimneys is a significant problem for many homes. It can cause structural damage, weaken bricks and mortar, and lead to leaks inside the property. Persistent moisture encourages mould growth and can affect air quality, posing health risks. Chimney damp can also reduce the efficiency of fireplaces or stoves and cause unpleasant odours.
If left untreated, small issues may become costly repairs. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential to prevent long-term damage and maintain a safe, dry home environment.

Our treatment was carried out by Craig, who took special care of all household items, whilst carrying out the treatment. Craig made sure to explain the best methods of cleaning the treatment. Would highly recommend! Thank youPosted on Leah Warner-TedaldiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had Kai and Sam come to do isotherm insulation on our walls. They were great, really upbeat and friendly. They worked really hard and left the place so tidy. The work looks good so far! Review is done on the day of completion Update: we had a lot of trouble with this company in the end. The plastering work ended up needing to be redone. It took 6 weeks for it to be redone and we were left with a completely unusable room and really bad communication. There were so many times when I rang through to the switchboard and escalated matters for nothing to happen. We felt totally helpless and stranded. I have since tried to get through to their complaints team to no avail. We had the isotherm sheeting fixed which was then skimmed over the top. Once this had set you could quite easily push it in with your finger, denting it (see pic of finger dents). The company surveyor (who we asked to be sent round) said that this was expected and how the isotherm works (I would not recommend!) Luckily they sent a plasterer round to fix it, and he said the whole thing (isotherm and all) needed to be redone, and he redid it all. It now looks really good and doesn’t dent with your finger. TBH I wouldn’t recommend this company, I found them impossible to get in touch with and just gatekept at a switchboard and left us in a really vulnerable position and took 6 weeks to fix it.Posted on Monika NiebojTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What is Chimney Damp?
Chimney damp occurs when moisture penetrates the chimney structure, affecting bricks, mortar, and internal flues. It can result from rainwater, rising damp from walls, condensation, or blocked ventilation. Dampness may cause discolouration, mould, and unpleasant smells inside the home.
Over time, it can weaken masonry, damage plaster, and reduce the efficiency of fireplaces or stoves. Chimney damp is often gradual and may go unnoticed until more serious problems develop. Identifying the source early and carrying out repairs is essential to protect the building.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is chimney damp a problem?
Chimney damp is not just unsightly; it can cause lasting damage to your property. Moisture weakens bricks and mortar, increases the risk of mould growth, and can lead to plaster damage or unpleasant odours indoors. Damp chimneys also reduce the efficiency of fireplaces or stoves and may result in costly repairs if ignored. Home Energy Save GB specialises in identifying problems early and offering effective treatments that keep your chimney dry, safeguard your home, and protect your family’s health by improving indoor air quality.
Can chimney damp affect my health?
Yes, chimney damp can impact health if it leads to mould growth indoors. Mould releases spores into the air, which can worsen asthma, trigger allergies, or cause respiratory irritation. Prolonged exposure is especially harmful for children, elderly residents, or anyone with existing health issues. Home Energy Save GB not only fixes the structural problem but also ensures your chimney is properly ventilated to prevent recurring damp. This helps create a cleaner, safer indoor environment for you and your family to enjoy year-round.
What is included in a free chimney damp survey?
When you book a free survey with Home Energy Save GB, a qualified surveyor will carefully inspect your chimney inside and out. They will look for visible signs of damp, assess the condition of bricks and mortar, and check for common causes such as damaged flashing or missing rain caps. You will receive honest feedback about the problem, along with recommendations for the best treatment. The survey is free of charge, comes with no obligation, and gives you peace of mind.
Will chimney damp damage my fireplace?
Yes, if left untreated, chimney damp can damage your fireplace. Moisture can cause metal parts such as inserts or grates to rust and weaken. It may also damage decorative finishes or plaster around the fireplace. In more severe cases, damp can reduce the efficiency of your stove or fire by affecting the draft within the chimney. Home Energy Save GB helps prevent this by carrying out professional repairs and treatments, ensuring your fireplace remains both functional and attractive for years to come.
How much does chimney damp treatment cost?
The cost of chimney damp treatment varies depending on the severity of the issue and the type of work required. Simple solutions like fitting a rain cap are less expensive than extensive repairs such as repointing or lining a flue. Home Energy Save GB provides free surveys with a clear, no-obligation quotation so you know exactly what is needed. We pride ourselves on offering competitive prices and tailored solutions that provide long-term protection for your home and peace of mind.
Is chimney damp common in older homes?
Chimney damp is very common in older homes because brickwork and mortar naturally deteriorate over time. Many older chimneys lack modern waterproofing or ventilation, making them more vulnerable to leaks and condensation. Rising damp from surrounding walls can also affect chimney breasts.
At Home Energy Save GB, we regularly treat chimneys in period properties and provide tailored solutions that respect the character of the home while addressing the damp effectively.
Do I need to stop using my fireplace if I have chimney damp?
If you suspect chimney damp, it is a good idea to limit or stop using the fireplace until the problem is properly inspected. Burning fuel in a damp chimney can worsen the issue, create condensation, or damage internal linings. It may also reduce efficiency and produce unpleasant smells. Home Energy Save GB offers free surveys to diagnose the issue quickly. Once repairs or treatments are completed, you can return to using your fireplace safely and with full confidence.
Can I treat chimney damp myself?
While some minor issues, like fitting a temporary rain cover, can be attempted, most chimney damp problems require professional expertise. Without proper diagnosis, you may treat the symptoms but miss the root cause, leading to recurring dampness. Working on chimneys also involves safety risks. Home Energy Save GB provides free surveys and professional treatments carried out by experienced surveyors and technicians. This ensures the job is done safely, effectively, and in a way that gives you lasting protection and value.
Can chimney damp reduce my property value?
Yes, visible damp can make a property less attractive to buyers and may lower its value. Damp patches, mould, or odours are off-putting and suggest potential structural issues. A chimney in poor condition could also be flagged in a survey when selling your home. Home Energy Save GB helps protect your investment by treating damp effectively and ensuring your chimney is in good condition. A dry, well maintained chimney not only safeguards your property but also supports its future value.
