Brilliant service, even helped me move a bed🙂Posted on Georgie AlexanderTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had our survey done, by Phil. He was very knowledgeable in the field, and walked us through the solutions we need to take. Our treatment was carried out by Craig, who took special care of all household items, whilst carrying out the treatment. Craig made sure to explain the best methods of cleaning the treatment. Would highly recommend! Thank youPosted on Leah Warner-TedaldiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had Kai and Sam come to do isotherm insulation on our walls. They were great, really upbeat and friendly. They worked really hard and left the place so tidy. The work looks good so far! Review is done on the day of completion Update: we had a lot of trouble with this company in the end. The plastering work ended up needing to be redone. It took 6 weeks for it to be redone and we were left with a completely unusable room and really bad communication. There were so many times when I rang through to the switchboard and escalated matters for nothing to happen. We felt totally helpless and stranded. I have since tried to get through to their complaints team to no avail. We had the isotherm sheeting fixed which was then skimmed over the top. Once this had set you could quite easily push it in with your finger, denting it (see pic of finger dents). The company surveyor (who we asked to be sent round) said that this was expected and how the isotherm works (I would not recommend!) Luckily they sent a plasterer round to fix it, and he said the whole thing (isotherm and all) needed to be redone, and he redid it all. It now looks really good and doesn’t dent with your finger. TBH I wouldn’t recommend this company, I found them impossible to get in touch with and just gatekept at a switchboard and left us in a really vulnerable position and took 6 weeks to fix it.Posted on Monika NiebojTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Early Identification of Rot is Vital
Rot spreads rapidly through airborne spores to other timbers in the property and can lead to serious structural damage if left untreated. It is vital to identify the cause, and stop the cycle early before the problem becomes dangerous to your home and health.
The spores land on the timber, and turn into hyphae, which are filaments that make up fungi to start the rotting process. This then develops into a fruiting body and more spores are produced. The cycle carries on repeating and rot spreads through the property.

What is Wood Rot?
Wood rot is the decay of timber caused by fungal growth, which weakens the wood’s structure. There are two types of wood rot; dry rot and wet rot. If timbers are damp for longer than six weeks, fungal decay can occur.
Dry rot can occur in timber with a lower moisture content (around 20%) and is known for its rapid spread and ability to cause significant structural damage.
Wet rot, on the other hand, occurs in timber with higher moisture content (26% and above) and leads to the softening and weakening of the wood. It’s often caused by persistent dampness. There are many different types of treatment depending on the situation, but the primary action is to address the underlying moisture problem.
Leaving wood rot untreated can be detrimental to your health as it can lead to the growth of Mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are poisonous substances produced by certain types of fungi or moulds, and can pose a range of health risks to humans and animals if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through skin contact. These risks include immune system suppression, chronic fatigue and in some cases, cancer.
Wet Rot Treatment
Wet rot is a common form of timber decay caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. It weakens wood over time, making it soft, spongy, and brittle.
Unlike dry rot, wet rot remains confined to damp areas and does not spread aggressively. It often appears darker than healthy wood, with cracks or a musty smell. Treating wet rot involves drying the timber, applying fungicidal treatments, and replacing severely damaged wood.
How Can Timber Rot Be Stopped?
Firstly, it is important to identify the type of rot in your timbers as there are different types of treatments.
– Woodworm Treatment
– Timber Repair and Replacement
– Preservative Treatments
– Fire Retardant Treatment
The key to keeping your timbers safe is to ELIMINATE the source of dampness. Wood boring insects and fungi thrive in damp conditions, causing the timbers to rot from the inside leaving them weak and unsafe.
Dry Rot Treatment
Treating dry rot involves removing affected timber and thoroughly drying the area to eliminate moisture.
Specialist fungicides are applied to the remaining wood and surrounding masonry to kill the fungus and prevent regrowth. Improving ventilation and fixing leaks or dampness issues are essential to preventing recurrence.
Because dry rot spreads quickly, early professional intervention is crucial to minimise structural damage and avoid costly repairs.

Woodworm Treatment
Woodworm refers to the larvae of wood-boring beetles that damage wooden structures by tunnelling as they feed. Over time, this weakens timbers in buildings and furniture. Identifying signs like exit holes and insect droppings helps detect infestations.
For energy-efficient homes, treatment involves monitoring these signs, applying insecticides to eliminate pests, and sealing gaps to prevent future damage.
Fire Retardant Treatment
Wet rot is a common form of timber decay caused by prolonged exposure to moisture. It weakens wood over time, making it soft, spongy, and brittle.
Unlike dry rot, wet rot remains confined to damp areas and does not spread aggressively. It often appears darker than healthy wood, with cracks or a musty smell. Treating wet rot involves drying the timber, applying fungicidal treatments, and replacing severely damaged wood.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is timber rot and why does it happen in homes?
Timber rot occurs when wood is exposed to excess moisture over a prolonged period, allowing fungi to develop. This often happens due to roof leaks, poor ventilation, rising damp, or plumbing issues. Once rot starts, timber loses its strength and can no longer support weight properly. At Home Energy Save GB, we regularly identify timber rot during our free timber surveys, helping homeowners understand the cause before serious structural damage occurs.
How can I tell if timber rot is affecting my property?
Common signs include soft or crumbly wood, a musty smell, flaking paint, and visible fungal growth. Floors may feel springy and skirting boards can appear warped or damp. In roof spaces, darkened timbers or cracking wood are often warning signs. Our experienced surveyors at Home Energy Save GB carry out free timber surveys to confirm whether rot is present and explain how advanced the problem is.
Is timber rot dangerous if left untreated?
Yes, untreated timber rot can compromise the structural safety of your home. Rotten joists, beams, or rafters can weaken floors, ceilings, and roof structures. Over time, this increases repair costs and can pose a risk to occupants. At Home Energy Save GB, we focus on early detection through free timber surveys so issues can be resolved before they escalate into major structural repairs.
Can timber rot spread to other areas of my home?
Yes, timber rot can spread if moisture problems remain unresolved. Wet rot can affect neighbouring timbers, while dry rot spores can travel through walls and floors. This is why identifying the root cause is essential. Home Energy Save GB provides free timber surveys to assess the full extent of the problem and prevent further spread with targeted timber treatment.
What areas of a house are most at risk of timber rot?
Roof spaces, basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and areas around windows and doors are most at risk due to moisture exposure. Poor ventilation increases the likelihood of decay in these areas. Our free timber surveys at Home Energy Save GB focus on high risk zones to ensure no hidden timber rot is missed.
How do I arrange a free timber survey?
Arranging a free timber survey with Home Energy Save GB is straightforward. Our experienced surveyors visit your home, assess all accessible timber, and explain any issues clearly. There is no obligation to proceed with treatment, just honest advice to help protect your property from timber rot and long term structural damage.
